The first production Gaskell left handed acoustic

Updated: Nov 21

As part of my experimenting with factory-made guitars in 2023, I spent a great deal of time researching whether there might be a need in the market for left hand acoustic guitars. There are a lot of left handed acoustic guitars out there. But there has never been a Gaskell lefty acoustic. It seemed like most lefty acoustics that I could find were pretty average and somewhat boring. Well, I decided to do a lefty acoustic, and what a great guitar it turned out to be!

The new Gaskell G1 is a left handed Grand Auditorium 6-string acoustic guitar made with top quality materials and with a unique design. I have never seen another guitar, left or right, like it. As with all previous factory Gaskells, the guitar is made oversees (China) but is set up properly here in Australia at Cilia Custom Guitars in Sydney.

The Gaskell G1 is available in two colours: natural, and sunburst.

Something a bit different is the fingerboard. As many of you would know, some traditional tonewoods are no longer commercially available due to restrictions because of criminal overlogging and illegal trade. Genuine mahogany from the Americas is impossible to get today, having been commercially banned over 20 years ago. Gibson Guitars got in trouble in the early 2010s for using rosewood that had been obtained illegally. You may remember. They went bankrupt not long after (not for that, but I am sure it didn't help.)

China is the largest importer of African mahogany in the world and if you want something made with African mahogany, there is nowhere else in the world that has quality stock in huge quantities than China. The top, back, and sides of the Gaskell G1 is made of genuine African mahogany. During my time making factory guitars, from 2007-2012, it was impossible to get something made with African mahogany. We only had Toona (Asian mahogany) or non-mahogany substitutes. (You can buy American mahogany again today, this time from sustainably grown Fijian plantations.)

The fingerboard on this guitar is a product called Blackwood Tek. It is one type of substance that is collectively called "engineered wood." It's actually man-made. I was a bit iffy about using this in the beginning but I am very happy with it now that I have tested and played on it. It is a very dark, almost all black colour and very very hard. It feels like ebony. Sound-wise, I do not notice anything different or sub standard about the tonal properties of the guitar. In fact, the guitar sounds amazing. I am very happy with it.

The Gaskell left handed G1 acoustic guitar sounds and plays great. And you can buy it for less than $1000.

This guitar is IN STOCK. Buy directly from Gaskell Guitars.
